Like many others, I was horrified to hear reports of disturbing and frankly dangerous ideology being peddled in our classrooms last year.

Even worse, many parents were being refused access to the materials used to teach their children about complex and sensitive issues.

As I said at the time, this is completely unacceptable.

As a dad to two young girls myself, I know being a parent is the most important job in the world.

We live to protect our children and to make sure they grow up happy and healthy, free from contested ideology that could potentially harm them.

Today we are publishing updated guidance, taking a common sense approach which will make clear that under no circumstances should parents be blocked from seeing the content taught in their own children’s lessons.

It will also back our teachers with clarity about what should be taught and when.

It should not be controversial to teach our children that biological sex is a fact, and schools should not use any materials that present contested views of gender identity as fact.

Nor should it be contentious to prevent adult content being taught at an age when children are simply too young to understand it.

At its heart, this updated guidance will make sure children have full capacity to understand everything they are being taught – balancing the need to prepare them for adulthood at the right time while protecting the magic of childhood.
